87 944 steering problem. The power steering is intermittent at best. It's harder to turn right than left. Especially hard to turn when stationary - understandable. Resealed rack and pump about 3 years ago because of leaks. The current problem started about a year ago. The steering would get 'stuck' in any position, requiring extra force to unstick it - then it would be fine, until little turning of the steering wheel was required for a while, then it would stick again. Now, as I mentioned, it's sometimes somewhat easy to turn left and most often very hard to turn right. What I've done to troubleshoot with no success is resealed the pump, replaced pump with used (known to be good) pump, checked stearing linkage for wear which may cause binding and relubed ball joints. When no load is on the front wheels, the power steering works. Thinking it's probably the rack valves not funtioning properly, but due to the length of the job to change out the rack, wanted to get some more opinions. Thanks.

Ive asked around the shop here and I've gotten you an answer. You may not like it. But its an answer.

According to the techs here, as long as your not currently losing PS fluid and the newish pump you installed is indeed functioning properly, it is more than likely the rack as you stated above.

The 944 is a great car and tons of fun on the road. However, their power stearing systems were known to be a little leaky and problematic.

Just for fun I googled around for others who had your problem and accidently found THIS little gem of a tutorial; for converting to manual steering if you wish.

Or you could of course just fix the power stearing system.

Hope this helps a little.
